What is Domiciliary Care And How Does It Work?

When most people hear the word ‘Domiciliary care’ they most likely picture hospitals or care homes. Unfortunately, people do not come to think about another option, being domiciliary care.

This type of care is gives people the opportunity to receive care in the comfort of their own homes instead of being in a hospital where it can be quite daunting to patients.

At Rumax Limited we offer supported living to people of all ages and different backgrounds. It is our mission to provide the best care possible to our service users helping them maintain their independency and dignity.

So What Exactly Is Domiciliary Care?

You might have yourself thinking, what is domiciliary care. This care type offers people to receive care in the home. Instead of people in a care home where they might be far away from their family and friends, they have the opportunity to have carers come to their residence and give them the required help they need. The aim is to give service users a safe space that they are familiar with where they feel comfortable and still get to manage their independence.

Who Can Benefit From Home Care?

Domiciliary care is not just for the older generation, it can be for anyone listed below:

  • Older/Elderly adults who might need help with day-to-day tasks. This can be from showering to medication prep to preparing their meals and feeding them.
  • People with disabilities who want to live independently but need some extra support.
  • Those recovering from illness or major surgery and need short-term help.
  • People with long-term conditions like dementia.

This gives families peace of mind due to how tough care giving can be. Having professionals come and help their loved ones gives them reassurance that they are not alone in this journey and they are in perfect hands.

What Do Carers ACTUALLY Do?

The pleasures of domiciliary care is the flexibility. The services are suited to each individual of what their needs are. Here are some of many examples of what any carer would do for a service user:

  • Personal care – washing, dressing, toileting, and grooming.
  • Medication – making sure medicines are taken on time.
  • Meals – preparing food and helping clients eat well.
  • Household tasks – light cleaning, laundry, or even a bit of shopping.
  • Companionship – chatting, listening, and keeping people company.

How Do Our Day To Days Work?

Before our services can even take place, we must carry out an assessment. This consists of understanding the needs of the service user, if we are able to carry out their care and if they have the space for us to do so.

From there, we create a personalised care plan that sets out:

What type of care is needed.

How often carers will visit.

The person’s goals – for example, staying independent or improving mobility.

Our carers will visit according to each service users set plan. This can vary to one visit a day to 4 visits a day depending on what the service user requires. For example, a service user might only need a morning call to get started with the day compared to someone who needs 4 calls a day which requires our carers to pay extra attention as these calls can be intense. These calls aren’t set and stone, they can be changed to make sure we give the right support to our service user.

Why Chose Domiciliary Care

Why Choose Domiciliary Care

There are many reasons why home care is such a popular option among families these days. Here are some of the main ones:

🏡 Staying at Home

Being around your family and close to your friends is the main one. Being away in a care home can be dauting and lonely at times. Dom care eliminates that feeling and gives you the chance be around your loved ones while receiving the help you need. Being in a familiar environment will put the service user more at ease. This is because they are comfortable being at home compared to being in a care home facility where they have no connection to.

💪 Independence

We make sure all of our service users still manage to have independence. This can be shown with certain tasks they can do. This can be as little as asking them to feed themselves if possible.

👩‍⚕️ Personalised Attention

During most visits, it can be one to one or two to one of the same carers visiting the service user. This meaning that our carers can give their utmost attention to our service user and attend their needs.

💷 Cost-Effective

As only a few hours are need per day or even every other day in some cases, it can work out a lot cheaper than having members in a care home. This reduces the financial strain on families who might be worried of the costs of care.

❤️ Family Peace of Mind

Knowing that your family member is in the right hands of professionals puts them at ease and reassures the family that their relatives will be dealt with accordingly.

Some Challenges to Think About

Some Challenges to Think About

As much as we highlight the positives of Domiciliary Care, there are some challenges we face such as:

  • Sometimes service users can get attached to some care providers and can be stubborn when someone comes in to provide the service. This can disrupt the flow of work for our carers and delay those who need care after the service user.
  • Unfortunately, the care industry is understaffed, this meaning that it can be straining on our workers when we have an overload of service users that need to be seen.
  • Some clients have difficult needs which can be hard to deal with so this can be challenging to these who have never come across such issues.
